Communicative
Approach (in the 1980s)
•The
primary purpose of language is communication, so using language
to communicate should be central in all classroom language
instruction. The goal of teaching pronunciation is not to
make them sound like native speaker of the target language (e.g.,
English, only a few exceptional highly gifted and motivated individuals
can make it). A more modest and realistic goal is to enable
learners to surpass the threshold level so that the learners’
pronunciation will not detract from their ability to communicate.
