Revolution
and Jesus:
Inquiry on the Chinese Modern Political Theology
- What is the proper
relationship between religion and politics? This
question, due to the sensitive role of the Taiwan
Presbyterian and its voice of Homeland Theology, has
obtained increasing attentions in Taiwan. However, there
were so many early Chinese Christians had already offered
more subtle political theology than Homeland Theology. By
this article we attempt to learn the lessons of history.
We discuss how the leaders of the Chinese Church in
1920-1928 to construct a political theology to meet the
challenges that came from the Anti-Christian Movement.
-
- The political theology,
contributed by many Chinese Christians, showed a strong
tendency toward a theory of secular Messiah, and
concentrated to describe Jesus as azealous revolutionist.
Nevertheless, they were not the same in the approach of
Jesus's revolution. Some viewed Jesus as a National
Revolutionist of the Kuomintang, some a revolutionist of
proletariat, and others a
- revolutionist of personality.
-
- Certainly, the pieties and
the conservatives in the Chinese Church criticized
fiercely these secular images of Messiah, and regarded
its promoters as unbelievers with conspiracy. We should
comprehend, however, the strong calling to the Chinese
Church, which came from the age of political upheavals
and national crises. In fact, every Christian in every
age should to face the choice whether to response the
world and to converse with its thoughts.
-
- Does any secular calling
clash with the sacred Calling of God? Max Weber pointed
out, compare to the case of Confucianism, that the
Puritans had borne the duty to change the world for the
glory of God. Nevertheless, the Bible can never provide a
standard
- mode of secular city, as the
blueprint in Plato's the Republic. On those secular
things, such as politics especially, each one gets the
right to interpret the biblical texts and inevitably
drops into the situation of Weber's "struggle of
gods."
