EEG and Cognitive Development

Designers are adept at determining similarities between previously seen objects and new creations using visual association. However, extant research on the visual association of designers and the differences between expert and novice designers when they engage in the visual association task are scant. Using electroencephalography (EEG), this study attempted to narrow this research gap. Sixteen healthy designers—eight experts and eight novices—were recruited, and asked to perform visual association while EEG signals were acquired, subsequently analysed using independent component analysis. The results indicated that strong connectivity was observed among the prefrontal, frontal, and cingulate cortices, and the default mode network. The experts used both hemispheres and executive functions to support their association tasks, whereas the novices mainly used their right hemisphere and memory retrieval functions. The visual association of experts appeared to be more goal-directed than that of the novices. Accordingly, designing and implementing authentic and goal-directed activities for improving the executive functions of the prefrontal cortex and default mode network are critical for design educators and creativity researchers.
Although social entrepreneurship has been the subject of considerable research and practitioner attention, detailed studies of the potential entrants, their perception of business performance, and the factors influencing this perception are rare. This study reviewed empirical data to determine how the imaginative capacities of potential entrepreneurs affect their perceived success in operating agrisocio enterprises. The reliability and validity, and the direct and interactive effects among different imaginative capacities were analysed. The study indicated that although conceiving and transforming imagination were positively related to all the dimensions of perceived performance, initiating imagination was negatively related to the dimensions of business operations and service programmes. Some interactions among the three types of imagination were also found. This study contributes to the social entrepreneurship literature by theorising and testing how imaginative capacities can be beneficial to potential entrants for perceiving business success.

Research in artificial intelligence (AI) is known to have impacted medical diagnosis, stock trading, robot control, and several other fields. Perhaps less popular is the contribution of AI in the field of music. Nevertheless, artificial intelligence and music (AIM) has, for a long time, been a common subject in several conferences and workshops, including the International Computer Music Conference, the Computing Society Conference and the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. In fact, the first International Computer Music Conference was the ICMC 1974, Michigan State University, East Lansing, US. Current research includes the application of AI in music composition, performance, theory and digital sound processing.

Air Transport

Aviation, or air transport, refers to the activities surrounding mechanical flight and the aircraft industry. Aircraft includes fixed-wing and rotary-wing types, morphable wings, wing-less lifting bodies, as well as lighter-than-air craft such as balloons and airships.
Aviation began in the 18th century with the development of the hot air balloon, an apparatus capable of atmospheric displacement through buoyancy. Some of the most significant advancements in aviation technology came with the controlled gliding flying of Otto Lilienthal in 1896; then a large step in significance came with the construction of the first powered airplane by the Wright brothers in the early 1900s. Since that time, aviation has been technologically revolutionized by the introduction of the jet which permitted a major form of transport throughout the world.

Sonic Art and Modern Dance

The perfect integration of sonic arts and modern dance

Modern dance is often considered to have emerged as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet. Socioeconomic and cultural factors also contributed to its development. In the late 19th century, dance artists such as Isadora Duncan, Maud Allan, and Loie Fuller were pioneering new forms and practices in what is now called aesthetic or free dance for performance. These dancers disregarded ballet's strict movement vocabulary, the particular, limited set of movements that were considered proper to ballet, and stopped wearing corsets and pointe shoes in the search for greater freedom of movement.
Sound art is an artistic discipline in which sound is utilised as a primary medium. Like many genres of contemporary art, sound art may be interdisciplinary in nature, or be used in hybrid forms. Sound art can be considered as being an element of many areas such as acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronics, noise music, audio media, found or environmental sound, soundscapes, explorations of the human body, sculpture, architecture, film or video and other aspects of the current discourse of contemporary art

Taipei Artist Village and Treasure Hill Artist Village

On October 12, 2001, the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs unveiled Taipei Artist Village, at No. 7 Beiping East Road. Based on the concept of reutilizing vacant city spaces, the city government declared a new purpose for the facility – a former office building of the Taipei City Department of Public Maintenance and Construction – as a space where artists could create and live. Through its artist-in-residence program, TAV would allow artists from both Taiwan and abroad to interact with the local community, integrating the special character of Taipei City and serving as a bridge between different cultures, fulfilling the social responsibilities of art. The complex had a completely new look, and a new mission: to practically promote cultural diversity centered on the city.
